What inspired you to work with WBS?
I was inspired to work with WBS because I think a good story is not rare; within every student is a unique perspective that deserves to be shared. But the ability to express that story? To put into words what you feel and think and know in a way that reaches and connects with other people? That is a skill that unfortunately not everyone is given the space and support to develop. Because of this, I was really drawn to WBS’s mission to empower all students to become stronger writers who are more confident in the value of their stories.
What surprises you about teaching for WBS?
I think it surprised me how much learning how to teach reminds me of learning how to drive. At first, everything is a bit daunting and chaotic. I learned the hard way not to sit three exceptionally chatty students at the same table, just as I once learned never to mistake the gas pedal for the brake. But gradually, just like gaining experience behind the wheel, the hours spent working with students and paying attention to the things that allow lessons to go most smoothly allowed me to become more comfortable in my role as a teacher (and a driver, though admittedly I’m still working on that).
What are some things you love?
Violets, chocolate cake, cloudless blue skies, fluffy dogs, and Coca-Cola from a soda fountain.
