What surprises you about teaching for WBS?
I’ve learned time and time again that there is no one-size-fits all definition for success. One
week, it might look like completing all our planned activities in such a timely manner that we never have to rush. Another week, it might look like crafting the most polished, comprehensive curricular plan imaginable and instead cobbling together an activity on the fly to meet our students’ particular needs that day. WBS has taught me that success can never be measured by just one metric—which is not only a valuable lesson for me as a teacher, but also one that I hope our students are able to apply to their own writing and lives.

Can you describe a favorite moment from teaching?
On her first day with us, one student announced during attendance that her name was Strawberry. (It wasn’t.) Rather than call her out on it, my co-teacher and I told her that we’d hold her to her word. If she said her name was Strawberry, her name would be Strawberry. And for the rest of the time she spent in our writing club, it was. (Don’t worry, she loved it.) In a small way, we were able to show our students that each word they say, no matter how silly, is truly important to us.

What are some things you love?
My little sister; the way the sky looks after a rainstorm; late-night conversations that feel like
they could go on forever; em dashes; Wreck-It Ralph; inside jokes that don’t really make sense anymore, which makes them even funnier; leopard geckos’ smiles
