What is your favorite lesson you’ve taught? Why?

My favorite lesson so far is my own lesson! I designed a technical lesson introducing students to five different kinds of adverbs. We started with a Simon Says activity with commands like “Simon says… wave furiously!” to get the students up and moving. We then wrote some incomplete sentences on the board to invite students to fill out adverbs. Students completed a worksheet next, completing sentences like “The smart detective examined the clues ______ so she wouldn’t miss a single detail.” The answer would be “carefully,” which they chose from a word bank. Finally, the students chose their top 3 favorite adverbs and wrote their own story using them. It was a great lesson!

What is something you’ve learned from your students?

One major thing I learned is the importance of Universal Design and the concept of representative learning. Each and every student learns in a different way. Each and every student shines in a different way. There are many forms of expression of talent in writing. Students may be really good at incorporating details from their personal lives into writing. Students may excel at using great vocabulary words in their writing. Students may be excellent at orally presenting their writing passionately to the class and peers. There are so many different ways students learn and demonstrate the results of their learning that we must be as inclusive as possible when it comes to the receiving end of their learning.

What is something you taught yourself to do?

I learned this technique from my roommate. The takeaway is to free-write three pages of content in the morning. Write whatever comes to your mind. Even if you don’t know what to write, you can simply write “I don’t know what to write” repeatedly until something new comes to mind. This form of free writing and introspection is drastically changing the way I view myself and interact with myself.
